Cottage Life

End of a nice week
I am always sad when I am waiting for the taxi to take us away from the cottage. We had such a great time and it was nice sharing it with friends. The kids just had a ball.....

This will probably be my last entry for a while on fotopages. I have created a new page on blogspot. I am gonna test this one out for a while, as I have just not been feeling the love with fotopages lately. I like the look on blogspot, but I am still experimenting with it and have not quite figured it all out. I am gonna keep my fotopages account, just in case. Apparently I can link to some of my videos on youtube, and I thought these may be fun to add.

So for the next little while, my new home is http://missesmurphy.blogspot.com. Hope you come and visit.

Summer Fun

Bobo on the water
I love this picture of Bobo. I got some great shots of Princess as well, but now that she has super-model status, it just feels creepy posting them. Oh, that and the fact that she never took her bikini off while we were at the cottage. I am so glad I took the summer off. If feels good to be laid back with no real purpose. The past few days has been spent helping out some folks in the hood and just putzing around the workshop. Who knows, I may even decide to make Doug supper.

I get to spend this coming weekend up at a fantastic cabin on a very private, beautiful lake. I took one of my favourite photos of all time there last year, so i'm hoping for a repeat.

Prison Food

Oh, I just can't help posting this picture.... I know it is wrong, but what the heck.

I love my husband. He is great in so many ways and we have a nice little life going on. Of course, nothing is perfect, and last night's supper was just a good example of this. Wednesdays is just the craziest day in our life. We generally just pass each other at the door, me as I'm returning from class and training, and him, as he is departing for his night of soccer and fun with the boys. He was thoughtful enough to have prepared some food for me. I was ravenous.

I think he intended to make some sort of tortellini soup, but discovered all we had was gnochi. I just could not stop laughing when I saw this in the pot. He was already out the door, so there were no hurt feelings. Even the kids have started referring to his meals as prison food.... but he makes me a mean latte in the mornings, so I think I'll keep him around.

One of my favourite authors passed away yesterday. His name was Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and he was 84. Do yourself a favour and read some of his books.

Unfortunately via some wild days as a juvenile, I know first hand what prison food looks like (and it's very similar to this). At my house the joke is that I'm a cook, Judi's a chef. I go to the cupboard and bemoan the lack of things to eat, she goes to that same cupboard and lays a 5 star 7 course meal on the table. I'm pathetic, but I make a good cup of joe myself. Pacemaker

I love this little train. I have a set of them I got last year when a production ended and they were selling off all their stuff. Probably only paid a buck or two for it. I have big plans to do something neat with it in Mr. Bobo's room.

I discovered I have been living with shingles for the past week. Boy, has it sucked. Don't ask me what I thought it was, but part of me just thought it was from all my training, as it was right around the waistband of my gear. The doc said it can be brought on by stress, and did I have any in my life. I am busy. Always. I take on too much and spread myself thin, but I always have and have dealt with it just fine. Yes, we have been renovating, but it has actually been pretty okay. I came home and tried to pinpoint the cause, and then it hit me. It probably came on the same day our vacation plans for May fell through. I could deal with it okay, but the thought of disappointing my kids is always upsetting, that coupled with the fact that their dad has been sick going on two months probably just sent my tired old body over the edge.

This is surely the gods telling me that I need to get on-line immediately and book a little weekend away. Nice to have a reminder, but Christ, did it have to bee such a painful one!

No Throwing Pins

I have been away for a while, just busy with life and work. Today I almost lost my head in an altercation with my table saw so I decided to just walk away from the workshop for a day. So now I find a small opportunity of time to update my blog. This is not a great photo, but I love it. I was doing some work at a shelter recently and this is what was posted in the playroom. Obviously someone threw a couple of pins and got in trouble. I hope nobody lost an eye. "Biteing" and "smashing through doors" is also forbidden. These are just plain good rules to live by.

I think I need to post a few rules in my workshop. Stuff like - "clean up after yourself, the floor does not sweep itself", and "don't throw chisels". For sure I have to add "don't run tools when you are in a pissy mood". Tomorrow I shall wear my bike helmet in there.

Oh I think we've all done silly things with power tools. Things that made us know why companies make the safety equipment they make. You know, the equipment we never use... Sat 31-Mar-2007 23:42

Chains

So many great images from the holidays, but I like this one as it represents a quiet afternoon with just Doug and the kids wandering around Riverdale Farm. This is the old, abandoned Monkey House beside the turtle pond.

I was reading an article about a group of friends in San Fran who made a group decision to go one year without buying any new goods. It hit a nerve with me as I am constantly disgusted by the amount we consume, and in turn, waste everday. I am also guilty of this. I do recycle - alot. I try not to buy processed foods and overpacked goods. I made a real effort to ride my bike more this summer, but I still rely on my car way too much. Having said this, I officially started my "year without shopping" over a week ago. We are not including renovation materials as we are needing to move forward with the work on our house. We can purchase used goods and essentials (foods, toilet paper, etc). Also, I don't think artwork should be included in this, but Doug may fight me on this. He has also agreed to do this, but has made me promise not to get any parking tickets this year - which may turn out to be harder than no shopping. I shall keep you all posted.

In the meantime, Happy New Year!

Then again, if all the parking tickets you got happened while you were shopping, it may be a cinch not to get any...

Kudos to you for taking a stand. The talk here is about 'An Inconvenient Truth...' which for us in the land of capitalism, freedom, blah-blah-blah really is "inconvenient." My partner commented that we really need to do our part. Knowing how she will not tolerate anything that inconveniences her, I simply smile and nod my head.

Cactus

My beautiful bloom
I only have one plant in my house because;

a) i'm not a plant person and,
b) i generally just kill them

The one plant that I do have is a Christmas Cactus. It was given to me by Joyce, an elderly neighbour, almost 14 years ago. Joyce was a real plant person. She had a turtle that was 30 years old as well. She was very nurturing. She only parted with this plant as she was moving from her home into a small apartment and could not take everything with her. I accepted it when it was gifted to me so I would always have something to remember her by. The plant was in a 6 inch pot when I got it, and had several blooms. I have tried to care for it all these years, but never once has it bloomed. There was one year when it shed all its leaves (do cactus have leaves?) after a summer in the yard. I was able to bring it back. It is quite large now and rests in a 14 inch pot. I have grown attached to it, despite it's reluctance to give me any flowers in return for my kindness towards it. Well, this week, to my surprise, I discovered one lonely bloom hanging from it. You would have thought we had won the lottery the way we all gathered around it in amazement.

I have learned in my lifetime that sometimes there are things/relationships/battles that are just not worth the effort, but I have also learned that there are also those that are worth it - for that lesson, I am grateful.

I find it best to care for silk. You can massage it with the vacuum, blast it with the hose, even neglect to water it for years and it still looks like Ms. Greenthumb lives at my house. In the 80's I had quite good luck with a plant everyone else failed with. The Prayer Plant. Mine even bloomed frequently. I believe it was the air in my house which was heavily laced with herbs like cannibis sativa... Mon 27-Nov-2006 22:09

Love Letters & The Price Of Happiness

Dear Mam....
Santa
So Many Choices...
View all 4 photos...
I have a bunch of love letters from my husband tucked away in a box. Every once in a while I pull them out and brighten up my day. My kids leave me little love letters too. Well, not in the same way, but I am sure they write them with loving intentions. We also have lots of chalkboards in the house. I put them on the kids doors to give them reminders of chores, homework, important dates etc. They immediately clean them off and instead leave me notes. Well, not Mr Bobo. He just drew a pumpkin on his. This week's letters consisted of

a) Letter Max wrote in school about his summer

I went to the park
I saw the airshow
I went to the ex
I went to my friends cottage
I went to my cottage
I saw my grandma and granpa

Makes you wonder why we spent all that money on his camps when they just never entered his radar.

b) His letter to santa is also a winner....

Dear Santa,

Nintendo PS (i think he has one already!)
Star Wars Lego
Silly Putty
Bord Games
Game Cube Cord
Tank you ho ho ho

I love that his Santa lists are so short. Myself, I remember doing elaborate collages on bristol board with photos I had cut out from the Sears and Canadian Tire catalogue. Perhaps I will do another one this year to ensure Doug does not buy me the crockpot shaped like a football.

And Princess, well she is another story. She left me a very detailed letter with a plethora of gift ideas. Really, her list is just to long to replicate, but suffice to say it is very thorough with sizes, store addresses and designer labels. Oh, not to mention some fancy electronic device that Paris Hilton owns. The icing on the cake was her final tag on her four page note...

Reminder: You can't put a price on happiness.

Profound, isn't it?

Oh what precious memories you have to keep you warm down the road. I hate to break it to you, but Doug didn't buy the football crock pot...it comes free with his subscription to Sports Illustrated. I hear Paris Hilton and her fancy electronic device are doing the swimsuit issue this year... Thu 23-Nov-2006 08:15

Danger

There must be a pool?
Well, spent the a.m. at the rink with Mr. Bobo. It was his first time on skates this year. He was completely out of control, but we could not get him off the ice. It was nice to see his enthusiasm. He just got invited to go rock climbing this afternoon, but it appears to be too much like work and is opting for the couch and the gamecube. We are having a lazy day. I awoke at 3 in the moring and wrestled sleep the rest of the night.. I foresee a nap in my near future. I went to my very first basketball game last night. The Raptors were playing Atlanta at the Air Canada Centre. If I told you where we were sitting, I would just be gloating, so I won't. I will however say Doug was pretty thrilled to touch a game ball, but wondered why he wasn't able to keep it. It was not a late night for us, but it just felt good to be out with adults. It was a nice diversion from a busy week.

I am sitting here test driving my new glasses. I hate them and they give me a headache. Apparently it will get better in a week, but I am struggling to keep from going crosseyed. Okay, so I know I have never been supermodel material, but now I just look like someone who walked off the set of Mayberry.

I am getting ready to struggle with real prescription glasses (that will give me a headache) versus pharmacy reading glasses where the diopter of one eye never matches the diopter of the other eye (thus giving me a headache and itchy eyes). So tell me, did the headaches go away as promised? Mon 27-Nov-2006 21:59

Dinner for six....

Dinner Party
Almost all the leaves have fallen from the red maple in my front yard. The weather was okay this weekend, but the cold is setting it. We had another restful weekend and were fortunate to get together with good friends. We are sufficiently recharged for a new week. The past two days have brought a death penalty for Saddam Hussein for atrocities against 148 Shiites, and the embarrassing fall of an evangelical leader in Colorado. Such and strange world we live in. I will not start a rant on this blog, or share my political views. All I will say is.... do something nice for someone this week. When you are done, teach your children to do the same.

A perfect entry! Tue 5-Dec-2006 16:35
